Have you ever seen people walking around with their shoe laces getting loose or becoming untied? Or perhaps you suffer from this same frustrating problem? Do you think you have to double tie your shoelace knot to keep it from becoming undone?
You might be tying your shoelace knot incorrectly.
The shoelace knot, when properly tied, is an elegant and simple locking knot that will stay tied all day, even during running and sporting activities, yet can be easily untied with a gentle pull on the ends of the string. It’s called the square knot or reef knot.
The two knots might look the same, but they are very different.
The difference is between a balanced shoelace knot or and un-balanced “Granny Knot”. You can often tell if the knot is tied correctly by looking at the direction that the shoelaces end up. If they stay side to side you most likely have a balanced knot. If the laces are laying forward to back, you probably have a Granny Knot that will soon loosen and become untied.

It might take you a few minutes to break the old habit, but once you learn the correct way, you will save yourself lots of frustration, and you’ll save yourself lots of time because you won’t have to double tie your shoelaces!
